Sightings During COVID - Part I

Writer's picture: Sherry ChenSherry Chen

Quietness descends and all creatures come to life! Being able to quiet my mind, I am able to witness the wonders and beauty of our surroundings.

I have started my routine morning runs and strolls through my neighborhood and nearby towns. During these slow and quiet times, I am able to pay attention to my surroundings and seeing life happening all around me as creatures simply go about their business, unobstructed by the stark realities facing mankind.

The following are some videos and photographs taken during my walks since April 2020.

It was a wonderous sight to witness a tiny nest that was artfully constructed by this little speedster hummingbird. This mossy-looking sturdy, yet cozy nest is approximately 3" in diameter built with love and care. The mother hummingbird guards her nest fiercely by charging towards approaching intruders - I am the guilty party and promise that I won't go near it again until the eggs hatch - as she tenderly cares for the birth of her little ones.

Of all creatures, sighting of birds was the most prominent.

Birthing season of the elephant seals at the Año Nuevo State Park.

This pair of geese strolling in the middle of the road undeterred by passing motorists... I spotted them all of the place and was in fear for their lives ;{
